Alan Thicke, Alan Biography
Alan Thicke was born Alan Willis Jeffrey in Kirkland, Ontario, in March of 1947, son of a nurse and stockbroker. His parents divorced when he was only 6. His mother remarried Brian Thicke and Alan took his last name. He is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario. Thicke has often said that he never even saw a television set until he was 7 years old, so he found it ironic that he was known for this medium.
Thicke began his career as a game show host on Canadian television in the late 1970’s. Norman Lear hired Thicke to produce and write a tongue-in-cheek type of talk show based on Lear’s Mary Hartman Mary Hartman character. Thicke had a very successful career behind the camera for much of his life, writing television theme songs, such as The Facts of Life and Different Strokes.
This multi-talented man will probably be remembered fondly for his portrayal of the psychiatrist and father on the television show Growing Pains, which ran for 7 seasons between 1985 until 1992. His character was ranked as #37 on TV Guide’s list of the Top 50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time.” Thicke also hosted several talk shows, authored two books about raising children, and hosted both the Miss America beauty pageant, as well as the Miss Universe pageant, and the Disney Christmas Parade, just to name a few. Thicke self-deprecatingly called himself “the affordable Shatner,” in reference to Canadian born actor William Shatner. Modesty appeared to be his natural virtue and was not an act, friends and family have stated.
Married three times, Thicke has 3 children, one of whom is the popular singer Robin Thicke. He sold his long time home in Toluca Lake, California, for $3.5 million. He owns another estate in Carpinteria, California. His son Robin recently spent $3 million on a beachfront home in Malibu, California, where the elder Thicke had been known to frequent.
Unfortunately, the man often referred to as “everyone’s favorite father” passed away from a heart attack in Burbank, California, December 13,2016. His net worth at the time of his death was $40 million, but that is little consolation to those who will miss his charming smile. Netflix was doing a follow-up program called Fuller House, which he was making appearances in. Hours before his death he tweeted that Season 2 of Fuller House was looking good. “I even like the episodes I’m not in!” his tweet said. Thicke will be greatly missed.
