Amy Winehouse Biography
Amy Winehouse was born in September of 1983 in north London. Amy’s uncles and grandmother were singers and jazz musicians. Her father often sang Frank Sinatra song to her. Her parents separated when she was nine with Winehouse splitting her time between her parent’s households. At her grandmother’s suggestion, Winehouse attended the Susi Earnshaw Theatre School on Saturdays where she took voice lessons and learned to tap dance. She started her own rap group called Sweet N Sour when she was 10.
She began writing her own music and playing guitar at 14. Her boyfriend, a soul singer, passed on a demo tape. Soon, Winehouse was signed to 19 Management and EMI. Winehouse released her first album, “Frank”, in 2003. It topped the charts in the UK and did very well, but nothing like her 2006 album “Back to Black”. This was the best- selling album of 2007. Combining a hip hop/soul sound with a bit of rock and roll style, Winehouse had stated that she had been influenced by the “do-wop” style of the 1950’s. This album created several number one hits including “You Know I’m No Good”, and “Rehab.” Winehouse also released several B-side songs that were big hits including “Valerie.”
Winehouse stayed consistent to her style regardless of critics or trends. Unfortunately, her obvious use of drugs, alcohol, and dramatic, very public love life overshadowed her immense talent. She was hospitalized in August of 2007 for what was reported as exhaustion when she was actually recovering from an overdose of ecstasy, cocaine, ketamine, heroin, and alcohol. Winehouse was found by her bodyguard on July 23, 2011, unresponsive in her bedroom. The coroner’s report stated that her blood alcohol was more than 5 times the legal limit at 416 mg per 100 ml. She was 27 years old.
At the time of her death, Winehouse had a net worth of $10 million. Her father owns the copyright to his daughter’s music.
