Bono Biography

Paul David Hewson, known by his stage name to all, Bono, was born in Dublin, Ireland, and raised in a suburb of Finglas, along with a brother. His mother Iris and father, Brendan Robert “Bob” Hewson, raised both their boys as Roman Catholics

Bono was only 14 when his mother passed. Many of the songs from his band U2 included songs that were focused on the loss of his mother, including “I Will Follow.”

Bono was given many nick names, one of which was Bono Vox, a derivative of the Latin phrase Bonavox, which means “good voice.” He didn’t care much for the nickname and later shortened it to Bono.

Bono began his career by responding to a bulletin board ad at his high school about forming a rock band. The band, “Feedback”, later changed to “The Hype”, were not very good at cover songs, so they simply decided to start writing their own. Bono was not a very accomplished guitar player and it was suggested that he try singing instead. Bono now writes almost all lyrics for U2 songs.

In 2005, U2 band members were made part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the first year they were eligible for nomination.

Bono is best known for his signature sunglasses that he is never without as he suffers from glaucoma.

In 1992 Bono invested in the refurbishing of the then 2 star Clarence Hotel.  He is on the board of Elevation Partners, a private equity firm, which has invested in numerous entertainment ventures including YELP. Bono is also invested in the Forbes Media group. Although details were not published, it’s said that Bono’s stake in the Forbes deal was $250 million.  Forbes Media group also owns part of the online networking site Facebook. Bono bought 2.3 percent of stock in Facebook for a mere $90 million. It will be worth more than $1.5 billion by the end of 2014 if the stock continues to climb. Bono’s investments through Elevation Partners have added about $200 million to his net worth.

Combined with his investments and income from his music, Bono’s net worth is $600 million from his career as a musician and his investments and $1.5 billion of Facebook stock, for a total net worth of $2.1 billion.
