Carl Icahn Biography

Carl Icahn was born on February 16, 1936 in Queens, New York. He grew up in Far Rockaway and attended Far Rockaway High School.  Icahn earned a B.A. in Philosophy from Princeton University, later attending New York University School of Medicine for two years before dropping out to join the army.

In 1961, at age 25 he began his career on Wall Street as a stockbroker. In 1968 he formed Icahn & Co., a securities firm that focused on risk arbitrage and options trading.

In 1978 he began to take substantial or controlling positions in corporations; a practice that has continued to the present day and includes companies RJR Nabisco, TWA, Texaco, Phillips Petroleum, Western Union, Gulf & Western, Viacom, Uniroyal, Dan River, Marshall Field’s, Samsonite, Marvel Comics, Revlon, Fairmont Hotels, Blockbuster, Kerr-McGee, Time Warner, Netflix, Motorola, and Herbalife, among others.

These investments and takeovers were not always welcomed by the companies; Carl Icahn has earned a reputation as a ruthless raider after his hostile takeover of TWA in 1985.

His billion dollar deals led Forbes to list Carl Icahn as one of the 40 Highest-Earning Hedge Fund Managers in 2013. In 2014 he is the twenty-second-richest person in the world with a net worth of $25.6 billion. He is #16 in the Forbes 400, #22 in the Forbes Billionaires list, and #5 on the Forbes Hedge Fund list.

His most recent venture has been to buy up Apple’s stock. He has started a very public campaign to encourage Apple to buy back as much of its stock as possible, which has come under intense criticism.

Carl Icahn’s net worth has and will continue to grow because even at age 78 he continue to be involved in his company Icahn Capital Management and continues to invest in new companies.
