Dag, Dagmar Biography

Dagmar Dolby was born in Germany in June of 1941. She graduated from Heidelberg University in Germany, and then attended Cambridge University for a summer program, which is where she met her future husband, Ray Dolby. The couple was married for 47 years, until the death of Ray Dolby in 2013. She inherited part of the Dolby Laboratories company upon his death. She has liquidated some of her shares since his death, earning herself about $327million after taxes. The remaining shares have been split between her two sons, David and Tom.

Dolby did some work for the family business, doing freelance papers, but her main focus was in non-profit work. The Dolby Family Fund is one of the largest non-profit groups in the country, with more than $31 million in donations. Dolby’s husband, over the past 50 years, became fascinated with the vibrations of his clarinet as a boy. He began to study sound and founded Dolby Laboratories in London in 1965. He moved the company to San Francisco in 1967. Everyone has heard of Dolby sound, and this pioneer of sound systems literally transformed the way in which sound is recorded, first removing the annoying “hiss” sound that used to be typical in recordings, removing unwanted sound from movies and television, later developing Surround Sound. Soon, Dolby was creating sound technology for home entertainment systems, video games, even cell phones and other mobile devices, such as tablets.

Dolby has donated $36 million for stem cell research at the University of California San Francisco, and more than $22 million to the Alzheimer’s Association for both research and treatment programs, as well as to the California Pacific Medical Center for research. Dolby has been an active pro-choice advocate for many years. She lives in San Francisco, California, and has a current net worth of $3 billion.
