Dan Friedkin Biography
Dan Friedkin was born in San Diego, California, in 1965. At a very early age, his father, Thomas Friedkin, introduced his son to aviation and vintage aircraft. Friedkin began flying gliders when he was 14 and was soon flying helicopters as well as a variety of tail wheel aircraft. He rated in the Lockheed JetStar at 18 and before he was 21, he was flying the P-51 Mustang planes. This began his lifelong love affair with warbirds and all types of aircraft that became the passion of his life.
Friedkin’s father founded Gulf States Toyota in 1968, which was, and remains, the sole Toyota distributor in Oklahoma, Texas, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana. This gives Friedkin the sole right to import and distribute all Toyota vehicles sold in these states. His company is the largest private business in Houston, Texas, with almost $8 billion in sales each year. Friedkin became the official CEO a few years ago, even though he has been working for the family business for more than 20 years. Since becoming CEO, Friedkin has been expanding the business, investing in luxury hospitality management business, a film company, as well as the purchase of a golf course.
Friedkin is the founder and chairman of the Air Force Heritage Flight Foundation and is one of only 9 civilian Heritage Flight pilots qualified to fly in formation with the United States Air Force demonstration teams. He participates in air shows throughout America and Europe as well as flying in commemorative displays around the world. In addition to his Toyota import business, he is the chairman and CEO of The Friedkin Group, a privately held consortium of businesses and other investments. He owns and oversees a wide range of automotive investments as well as a private equity firm, Friedkin Capital Partners. Friedkin also runs several luxury safari operators as well as the Friedkin Conservation Fund, a charitable organization which oversees the habitat and wildlife for more than 7 million acres in Tanzania.
