Daniel “Dan” Haggerty was born in Pound, Wisconsin, in November of 1941. The Haggerty family owned a small wild animal attraction. Haggerty grew up training and caring for various animals, including an orphaned black bear. After finishing school, Haggerty moved to California to find work as an actor.
Haggerty’s first movie was small, non-speaking role as a body builder in the 1964 film, Muscle Beach Party. He worked in various other films including Girl Happy, Easy Rider and Angels Die Hard. Haggerty also did a few stunt roles for Walt Disney’s Tarzan, but it was his work as an animal trainer that he was best known for. For the movie When the North Wind Blows, he trained white tigers, eagles and wolverines. He also trained bears and foxes for the movie Grizzly Mountain. It was Haggerty’s role in the movie The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams, that he is best known for. This movie turned into a television series of the same name, which ran from 1977 until 1978. Haggerty continued to work a few other movies including Repo Jake, Grizzly Mountain and Escape to Grizzly Mountain.
Haggerty passed away after a short battle with cancer. He complained of severe back pain and surgery discovered that he had cancer of the spine. Haggerty passed on early Friday morning, January 15th, 2016, at his San Fernando Estate, surrounded by family and friends. he was 74.
