David Duffield Biography

David Duffield was born in 1941 and attended Cornell University, where he received both a Bachelor’s degree and an MBA in electrical engineering. Duffield was a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. Duffield created two mainframe application software companies.  Duffield worked for IBM as a systems engineer and marketing representative.

Duffield mortgaged his house to provide funding for his first successful company, which he created when he was 47, PeopleSoft, which provided Human Resource Management Systems, Supply Chain Management, Customer Relationship Management, and Financial Management Solutions. This was the first company to create DB2-based accounting and human resource systems. He is the former chairman of this very successful software company, which grew to be the world’s second largest software company before it was purchased by Oracle for $10.7 billion in January of 2005.

Although Duffield was 65 years of age, a time when most people, especially those who had the funds to do so, look forward to retiring, Duffield and the former vice chair of PeopleSoft, Aneel Bhusri, instead put their heads together and began another extremely successful software company called Workday in March of 2005. Duffield served as Co-CEO along with Bhusri, as well as the chief customer advocate for his company. Workday is based in Pleasanton, California and has a workforce of more than 1,000 people. He is still actively involved in the day to day operations of his company, whose stock prices have skyrocketed since its IPO in October of 2012.

Duffield has 10 children but has stated that he has no plans to leave his fortune to them. Instead, Duffield’s current net worth of $7 billion is slated to go to an animal charity, Maddie’s Fund, which he set up and named after his beloved and cherished schnauzer. Duffield has already endowed this fund with more than $300 million. It is unknown how much, if any, Duffield has given his children.
