David Murdock, Dave, Dave Murdock Biography
David Murdock was born in Ohio in April of 1923. His parents were so poor that his mother had to take in laundry and scrub floors to make ends meet. He grew up in the Montgomery Township area of Ohio. He had a difficult time in school due to dyslexia and dropped out of high school in the 9th grade to go to work. He was drafted in 1943 and served in the United States Army. After his service, Murdock moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he quickly found himself homeless and completely broke. His luck changed, however, and a Good Samaritan loaned him $1,200 to purchase a diner that was going out of business. After less than a year, Murdock sold the business and earned a $700 profit. This gave Murdock a taste for purchasing failing businesses that would stay with him his entire life.
Murdock moved out to Arizona, where he began working in real estate. He moved to California in the 1960’s and began acquiring land. In 1985, Murdock took over a Hawaiian firm, Castle & Cooke, which was on the verge of bankruptcy. This company also owned Dole Food Company. Under Murdock’s management, Dole has since become the largest producer of fruits and vegetables in the world. He also once owned 98 percent of the Hawaiian island Lanai. He sold his share of the island to Larry Ellison in June of 2012.
Murdock has known tragedy in his life, however. In 1986, his adopted son died after hitting his head in the family swimming pool. His other son, David Jr., died in a car accident in 2004. He has one surviving son, Justin, who now serves as the CEO of Dole. His third wife, Gabriele, died of ovarian cancer in 1985. Since her death, Murdock has been interested in finding a cure for cancer, as well as finding ways to increase longevity. In 2006, Murdock opened the California Health and Longevity Institute to work on his dream of stopping cancer. Murdock has a current net worth of $2.6 billion and at 93, shows no sign of slowing down.
