Dennis Washington was born in Spokane, Washington in 1934 and grew up in the Bremerton, Washington and Missoula, Montana areas. The family moved several times when Washington was young due to World War II. His father finally found work in a shipyard and Washington earned extra money shining shoes right outside the shipyard gates. He contracted polio when he was 8 and spent most of the next year in a hospital in Seattle.

His parents separated after the war and Washington shuffled between one relative’s house to another all over the West. Although Washington had a difficult time in school, he was not afraid to work hard, taking various jobs at gas stations, learning to run bulldozers, cranes, and backhoes. He traveled to Alaska when he as 19, where he earned a reputation as an excellent heavy equipment operator.

When he was 23, Washington was running the largest highway construction project in Montana as well as working as a subcontractor on the Noxon Rapids Dam. When he was 30, Washington borrowed $30,000, and with one bulldozer, he founded Washington Construction. He took numerous highway contracts and by 1969, Washington was the biggest contractor in Montana. Washington reopened the copper and molybdenum mine. He also reopened Burlington’s long-closed locomotive repair facility. His Equipco Corp. reconditions used construction equipment for resale. Envirocon specializes in environmental cleanup, a very profitable sideline to his construction company. Washington has also invested in real estate, aviation, coastal shipping and marine services.

Washington purchased Raytheon Company in 2001 but quickly found out that he had been misled and the company was not as valuable as he thought. This led the Washington Group to file for bankruptcy. He lost Washington Group International, but managed to hold on to his privately held Washington Companies. Washington has a current net worth of $5.9 billion and splits his time between his four multi-million dollar mansions and his 332 foot, 5 story yacht.
