Donald Bren Biography


Donald Bren was born in Los Angeles to a father who was a famous movie producer He grew up working as a carpenter’s helper for his father’s building projects. He attended the University of Washington on a skiing scholarship, where he received a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Economics. He tried out for the 1956 Olympic ski team but did not quality and ended up serving three years in the Marine Corps.

Bren built his first home in Newport Beach, California, with a $10,000 loan. He began his business career in 1958 when he founded the Bren Company, which built homes throughout Orange County, California. Bren, along with two business partners, then started a company they named the Mission Viejo Company (MVC). They began by buying 10,000 acres of land to develop a new city, now called Mission Viejo. Bren was the President of MVC from 1963 to 1967.

Bren sold Bren Co. to International Paper for $34 million in 1970, which sold it back to Bren in 1972 for $22 million. With the earnings from these sales, Bren joined a group of investors in 1977 to purchase a 146 year old company called Irvine Company. Bren was the largest shareholder and by 1996 he had bought out all other owners, thus becoming the sole owner of this lucrative company.

The Irvine Company now owns more than 500 office properties, more than 40 shopping centers, three hotels, several golf clubs, a few marinas, and almost 50,000 apartment complexes. Bren’s company started work on a 102 million square foot office campus that will open in the Silicon Valley, California area in 2016. He recently purchased an office tower in the downtown Chicago area for $850 million. Bren’s home that he built for $10,000 is now worth an estimated $5 million. Donald Bren’s 2014 net worth is $15.6 billion.
