Dr. Phil McGraw Biography

Phillip McGraw was born in September of 1951 in Vinita, Oklahoma. The family moved when McGraw was still young so that his father could pursue his career as a psychologist. McGraw attended Shawnee Mission North High School in Kansas and was awarded a football scholarship to the University of Tulsa in 1968. McGraw transferred to Midwestern State University in Texas later on. He graduated with a B.A. degree in psychology and earned his M.A. in experimental psychology in 1976. He then earned his Ph.D., in clinical psychology in 1979 from the University of North Texas. McGraw then joined his father’s psychology practice in Wichita Falls, Texas.

McGraw and his father joined a successful Texas businesswoman, Thelma Box, in an experienced based seminar program called Pathways. Many critics claim that most of the phrases and quaint sayings used by McGraw on his television show, Dr. Phil, and on the Oprah Winfrey show, came directly from this program. McGraw has never mentioned, nor given credit to Box for his success or the use of her Pathways seminars.  McGraw first came into contact with Oprah Winfrey through the consulting firm that he and Gary Dobbs had co-founded called Courtroom Sciences, Inc.

Oprah Winfrey hired CSI and was so impressed with McGraw that she asked him to appear on her show. Soon, McGraw was appearing weekly. He  published his first best-selling book the year after appearing on Winfrey’s show and has since gone on to publish 3 additional best- selling relationship books. McGraw now has his own show entitled Dr. Phil, which he launched in 2002.

McGraw had ceased to practice psychology after starting CSI but kept his license in good standing until he retired it in 2006. He has stated that he no longer requires the license because his show is more entertainment than psychology.  McGraw also earns money from his numerous endorsements selling everything from energy bars, weight loss supplements and shakes. McGraw currently has a net worth of $280 million.
