Elton John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in March of 1947. H began playing piano at the age of 3 and began formal lessons at 7. By the time he was 11, he had won a scholarship to London’s Royal Academy of Music. His stepfather helped him get a job playing the piano at a local bar when he was only 15 years old.
In 1966, John and some friends formed a band named Bluesology, and this was when Dwight changed his name to Elton John. At about the same time, John met up with songwriter Bernie Taupin and the two began to make music together. John released his first albums in 1969 and 1970. He then made seven consecutive albums that hit #1 between the years of 1972 and 1975.
In 1992, John and Taupin signed a 12 year, $39 million dollar contract with Warner Bros. Records, which included the largest cash advance in music history at the time. John, in combination with Tim Rice, wrote the songs for the Disney movie “The Lion King”, which won John a Grammy and sold more than 15 million copies. The pair continue to work together and have made over 30 albums together to date.
Elton John is one of the best-selling music artists in the world with more than 300 million records sold and more than fifty Top 40 hits. His tribute to Princess Diana, 1997’s “Candle in the Wind” sold over 33 million copies and is the best-selling single of all time.
John was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in in 1998 for “services to music and charitable services.”

He made it very plain that he was unhappy that Trump was playing his 1972 hit “Rocket Man” at his rallies and political fundraising events.
