George Roberts Biography

George Roberts was born in 1944 in Houston, Texas. Roberts attended Culver Military Academy, then Claremont McKenna College, where he graduated in 1966. Afterwards, Roberts attended the University of California’s Hastings College of Law, graduating in 1969.

Roberts went to work for Bear Stearns soon after college and became a partner at the age of 30, along with his cousin, Henry Kravis. Roberts, his cousin Kravis, and another coworker, Kohlberg, became a dynamic trio within the company, completing what was called “bootstrap” investments. They acquired Orkin Exterminating Company, then a series of leveraged buyouts including Rockwood International, Boren Clay, Cobblers Industries, and Stern Metals.

This dynamic trio and Bear Stearns butted heads and in 1976, the trio left Bear Stearns to form their own investment firm, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts that same year. This company has led some of the most profitable and famous leveraged buyouts in America’s history, including the takeover of Nabisco. This tale even spawned a book and movie called Barbarians at the Gate. Roberts has been shown on the cover of Fortune magazine, alongside his first cousin Kravis. KKR now manages more than $99 billion in assets and has generated more than $690 million in profits in 2013 alone, which is an incredible 23 percent increase from 2012. KKR has done this by cashing in on some of their investments including the sale of Korean brewer Oriental Brewery to Anheuser Busch for $5.8 billion in 2014, which earned this investment firm more than three times the capital it invested in the company in 2009.

Roberts was widowed in 2003 and remarried in 2010 to a Goldman Sachs partner, Linnea Conrad. He has a current net worth of $5.1 billion and lives in Atherton, California. With more than 4 decades of investment experience, Roberts is sure to increase his earnings and net worth in the foreseeable future.
