Glenn, Glenn Frey Biography
Glenn Lewis Frey was born in November of 1948 in Detroit, Michigan. He grew up in the Royal Oak area of Michigan. At the age of 5, Frey was studying the piano and soon afterwards, he began to play guitar. Frey soon become part of the 1960’s Detroit rock scene. He started several bands while in attending high school but it was after graduating that Frey formed his first real band called The Four of Us. This incredibly talented young musician was already playing acoustic guitar and singing backup vocals for Bob Seger on his song Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man when he was 19 years old.
Frey is best known for the part he played in forming one of the biggest bands of the 1970’s, The Eagles, along with friend Don Henley. Frey met Henley in 1970 while the two were singing backup vocals for Linda Ronstadt. Frey wrote, or co-wrote, many of the Eagles biggest selling songs and sang lead vocals on such hits as Tequila Sunrise, New Kid in Town, Lyin’ Eyes, Take It Easy and Heartache Tonight. The Eagles were the #1 selling band in the 1970’s, however, personal problems among the band caused them to break up the act in 1980. The band reunited for a time in 1994 with an album called “Hell Freezes Over”. This is because Frey was fond of saying that The Eagles would reunite when hell froze over.
After the break-up of The Eagles, Frey went on to have a successful career on his own, including hit songs like Smuggle’s Blues, You Belong to the City, and many more. He also had some success as an actor, working in small roles for television such as Miami Vice and Wiseguy.
Frey passed away in New York City on January 18,2016, due to complications from rheumatoid arthritis, colitis, and pneunomia after recovering from intestinal surgery. Frey is survived by his second wife Cindy and their three children.
Frey is a legend in the world of Rock and Roll. As a member of The Eagles, he took home six Grammy Awards. The group was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. At the time of his death, Frey had a net worth in 2016 of $90 million.
