Haim Saban Biography
Haim Saban was born in October of 1944 in Alexandria, Egypt. The family moved to Israel in 1956. His parents sent Saban to a boarding school but he was expelled for being a troublemaker. He enrolled in night school where a principal told him that he should forget about school and focus on making money. He began playing in a rock and roll band and was signed to Polydor Records in 1969 but due to financial difficulties, the band was not successful and Saban returned to Israel but soon ventured to France to work as a music producer.
It was in the early 1980’s that Saban began writing songs, including the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers theme song. Saban came to the US and began to work as a television producer, founding Saban Entertainment in 1988. Saban created soundtracks for children’s television programs. It was in the 1990’s that Saban struck it big with his production of The Power Rangers. Saban and News Corporation sold the Fox Family Worldwide Inc. for $5.3 billion to The Walk Disney Company in 2001. Saban’s share of this sale was $1.6 billion. Saban, and a group of private investors, bought the Spanish language television station Univision for $13.7 billion. Saban recently bought a controlling stake in publicly trade Israeli telecom firm Partner Communications in 2013.
It hasn’t all been sunshine and roses for Saba, however. In 2010 Saban was part of a lawsuit brought by the Mexican broadcaster Televisa, where he was forced to make a deal in which Televisa bought a stake in Univision for $1.2 billion and agreed to provide its US network with popular programming. Saban has a current net worth of $3.4 billion, which is amazing considering that this billionaire media mogul has never attended college. Saban lives in Beverly Hills, California, with his wife.
