Harry Bratsberg, best known by his stage name Harry Morgan, was born in Detroit, Michigan, in April of 1915. He grew up in the Muskegon area of Michigan and graduated from Muskegon High School in 1933. Although he originally thought about becoming a lawyer, he began studying acting during his second year at the University of Chicago.
Morgan’s first film was The Shores of Tripoli in 1942. The credits list him as Henry Morgan. He soon began appearing in numerous movies such as The Ox Bow Incident, The Glenn Miller Story, High Noon, Bend in the River, Thunder Bay, The Far Country, Inherit the Wind, and How the West Was Won, just to name few. In all, Morgan has appeared in more than 100 movies during his 60 year career.
It is perhaps his television roles, however, for which he is best known. He played in The Untouchables alongside Robert Stack, Have Gun-Will Travel, and Gunsmoke. He is well-known for being Joe Friday’s partner Bill Gannon in the television series Dragnet, which ran from 1967 to 1970. Morgan’s most known, however, for his role in the television series M*A*S*H as Colonel Sherman Potter. Morgan was 60 years of age when he played this role and in 1980 he was awarded an Emmy for his performance. He later appeared in several Disney movies and made a few appearances on other television series such as Grace Under Fire.
Morgan passed away at his home in Los Angeles December 7, 2011. His son stated the cause of death was pneumonia. He was 96 and one of the oldest living male actors of his time.
