Herb Alpert Biography
Herb Alpert was born and grew up in the Boyle Heights section of Los Angeles. Son of a tailor who was also a talented mandolin player, Alpert learned an early appreciation of music. His mother taught him the violin at a very young age. Alpert began trumpet lessons at 8 years old and often played at dances as a teenager.
After graduating from Fairfax High School, Alpert joined the United States Army and was often asked to perform at military ceremonies. When he was discharged from the Army, Alpert tried acting, but found he preferred music. He was a member of the USC Marching Band while he attended college at USC.
Alpert set up a small recording studio in his garage. During a visit to Tijuana, Mexico, Alpert listened to a Mariachi band during a bullfight. Alpert has stated that he wanted to find a way to musically express the wild response of the crowd, hearing the brass musicians, and the crowd cheering. He recorded a cover of a song called The Lonely Bull and spread it to DJ’s in his area. It became a Top 10 hit in 1962. Alpert quickly followed this up with an album of the same name and listed the credits as Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass. Since then, the group has won six Grammy awards, and have reached platinum with fourteen albums and gold with fifteen albums.
Herb Alpert is still working and adding to his net worth of $750 million. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and there are dozens of “sound alike” bands that are trying to capture a bit of the magic, not to mention the earning power, of this musician. Alpert lives in a multi-million dollar 12,000 square foot mansion in Malibu, California, that he helped to design. His home has an ocean view, a recording studio, a special room for sculpting and another for painting, his newest hobby.
