Herbert Kohler Jr. was born in 1939 to Herbert Kohler Sr., who was the CEO of the Kohler manufacturing company from 1937 until his death. Kohler attended Yale University, where he graduated in 1965 with a degree in Industrial Administration. After graduation, he went to work for the family business. He was elected chairman and CEO when he was only 33 years of age. The Kohler Company was founded by his grandfather in 1873 and was originally devoted to the creation of farm tools, hitching posts, and cemetery ornaments. This company has gone on to become one of the most successful kitchen and bathroom fixture operations in the world. The company is less known for its other products, which include engines, generators, tile, and furniture.

Kohler owns several golf courses and resorts in Wisconsin. His course Whistling Straits will host the 2020 Ryder’s Cup as well as the PGA Championship in 2015.Another of his courses hosted the Women’s US Open in 2012. Kohler also owns another golf course and resort located in St. Andrews, Scotland, named Old Course Hotel. Kohler’s AAA rated, 5 star resort hotel, The American Club, is a former worker’s dormitory that is located directly across from the Kohler headquarters building.

Kohler has appeared in several movies, including the film Open Range, which was released in 2003 and starred Kevin Costner. Kohler got the part because he is a friend of Costner.
