Charles Ergen Biography

Charles Ergen, born in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is perhaps one of the most clever dealmakers in the satellite and cable television business. After graduating from the University of Tennessee, he got his MBA from Wake Forest University. He then studied finance, became a CPA, and worked for Frito-Lay before he decided to make his own fortune.

Ergen and a friend, Jim DeFranco, along with Ergen’s wife, founded EchoStar in 1980. They began their company by selling satellite dishes door to door in Colorado. In early 1996, Ergen rolled out Digital Sky Highway (DISH). By August of 1996, DISH had more than 100,000 clients. With the launch of EchoStar II in September of 1996, DISH had more than 350,000 clients by the end of the year.

Under Ergen’s directions, DISH and EchoStar have gone on to acquire numerous other service providers which only add to Ergen’s net worth and earnings including; Blockbuster, Sling Media Inc., Hughes Communication, TerreStar, and DBSD. Ergen has a penchant for buying nearly bankrupt companies at auction and somehow making them turn a profit when others were unable to do so.

Forbes lists Ergen as the 6th richest man in the state of Colorado and #52 on their list of the top richest 400 Americans. He owns a spacious mansion on 35 acres of land in Denver’s exclusive Grant Ranch subdivision that has been valued at $2.1 million. Although Ergen stepped down as CEO, he is still Chairman of the Board for both companies and with shares that total 52 percent of both DISH and EchoStar; he has 88 percent of its voting power, along with stocks that continue to increase in value with a combined market capitalization of about $35 billion. Ergen’s earnings allow him to enjoy his favorite sport, mountain climbing, and with an impressive net worth of $19 billion, he can afford to mountain climb anywhere in the world, including Mount Everest.
