Jack Taylor Biography

Jack Taylor, born in St. Louis Missouri, attended Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis but dropped out to join the US Navy and fight in WWII. Taylor served as a fighter pilot and flew his F6F Hellcat from the decks of the USS Essex, as well as the USS Enterprise. After the war, he began working at a Cadillac dealership and was soon overseeing the car leasing business. He made an agreement with his employer that for an initial investment of $25,000, he would get a 25 percent interest in the business. They began their car rental business with 8 cars and named it Executive Leasing Company.

Taylor then expanded his business to reach outside the St. Louis area and changed the name to Enterprise, after the aircraft carrier he served on during the war. By 1980, Taylor had 6,000 cars and by 1989, 50,000 cars. By 1992, Enterprise has more than $1 billion in sales and by 1995, more than $2 billion. His company has since purchased other competitors such as Alamo, and National car rental service, WeCar, and PhillyCarShare.

Although Taylor stepped down as CEO in 1994, he still serves as director and advisor to his son, Andrew, who is the current CEO. Taylor is listed as the 28th richest person in the Forbes 400 list and the 94th richest in the list of World Billionaires.

Under Taylor’s business motto, “Take care of your customers and employees first, and profits will follow,” he now has more than 1 million cars and trucks, which is the largest fleet of rental vehicles anywhere in the world today.  With a current net worth of $11 billion, it appears that Taylors business motto is paying off and is a perfect example of how small earnings and investments, along with a winning business plan, can lead to enormous profits and incredible net worth over time.
