Jamie Oliver Biography

Jamie Oliver was born and raised in the village of Clavering, England. His parents owed and ran a pub/restaurant, called the Cricketers. Oliver used to practice cooking in the kitchen while his parents were working. Oliver left school at 16 and went on to attend Westminster Catering College.

His first job was working as a pastry chef at Antonio Carluccio’s Neal’s Yard Restaurant. This is where he learned to prepare Italian cuisine and met his mentor Gennaro Contaldo. Oliver soon moved on to The River Café as a sous chef. It was while he was working there that he was noticed by the BBC after making an unplanned appearance during a documentary. That year, his show “The Naked Chef” debuted. He soon penned a cookbook which became a number one best seller in the UK.

Oliver had endorsements with the UK supermarket chain Sainsbury’s as well as 3 different series of the Naked Chef programs. Oliver then moved on to do a documentary called Jamie’s Kitchen, where he continues training disadvantaged youths for careers in the restaurant business. Oliver owns a restaurant chain, Jamie’s Italian, which currently has 27 locations.

Oliver has worked hard on a formal campaign to ban unhealthy foods in British schools and encourage children to eat more nutritious foods instead. He showed in his television series Jamie’s School Dinners, that schools could serve healthy, yet cost-efficient meals that kids would actually eat. Due to his influence, the type of foods now served to school children in England has been drastically changed.

Oliver’s cooking and television presence has earned him a net worth of $400 million. He owns a mansion in Primrose Hill valued at more than $12 million. This is quite impressive when you consider that Oliver is dyslexic and read his first novel at the age of 38.
