Hildebrand worked for American Energy Capital Corporation, then Dan A. Hughes Company, and later on, Exxon Company. Hildebrand then founded Hilcorp Energy Company in 1989. Under Hildebrand, Hilcorp has grown substantially. He was able to buy out one of his partners, Thomas Cook, for a mere $500 million in 2003. In 2010, Hildebrand had a net worth of $1.9 billion. Hildebrand’s biggest payday came in 2014, when he turned a $100 million dollar investment in Eagle Ford shale in 2011 into a deal worth $1.4 billion when he sold Eagle Ford to Marathon Oil.
Hildebrand’s shrewd business sense has enabled him to own multiple oil rigs in both Alaska and Ohio. He’s known as a generous man, who gave a $50,000 bonus to every single employee in 2010. He states that the next time his company doubles in size; he will give every employee a $100,000 bonus. In the past 24 months, Hildebrand’s net worth has dropped from a high of $5.4 billion to $4.6 billion. He bought a 957 acre property in Colorado that formerly belonged to John Denver and he is building a new 24 story, 500,000 square foot tower in downtown Houston for use as Hilcorp’s new headquarters. Hildebrand has a current net worth of $4.6 billion.
