Jeffrey Skoll Biography
Jeffrey Skoll was born in January of 1965 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The family moved to Toronto in the late 1970’s. Skoll’s father was 14 when his father was diagnosed with cancer and told his son that he regretted not having time to do all the things he had planned. Skoll intended to become a writer and writing motivational books and books on tackling both personal and world issues.
Skoll graduated with honors from the University of Toronto’s electrical engineering program in 1987. He helped to pay his way through college by working at a gas station. After graduation, he backpacked around the world for a few months before returning home. He founded two businesses; Skoll Engineering and Micros on the Move Ltd, both located in Canada. Skoll then went to the US to attend Stanford Business School, where he earned a Masters of Business Administration in 1995. After graduation, he went to work at Knight-Ridder, where he did internet projects for the publishing company.
Skoll met eBay’s founder, Pierre Omidyar, in 1996, and was hired as eBay’s first president and first full time employee. Although eBay was already profitable, Skoll wrote up a business plan that eBay then followed, which turned it from merely profitable into the huge success that it is today. Skoll continued as President until 1998, when he became Vice President of Strategic Planning and Analysis until a skiing accident left him with severe back problems, which forced him to leave the company. Skoll still maintains a $500 million investment in eBay, which makes him the second biggest stockholder as well as leaving him free to do whatever he pleases.
Skoll established the Skoll Foundation in 1999 and this foundation is now that largest of its kind, supporting about 74 entrepreneurial organizations in more than 100 countries. Skoll is especially passionate about charities that protect the climate and help the poor. Skoll has a current net worth of $4.1 billion, which, despite his charitable giving, increases every single year.
