Jim Kennedy Biography

James C. Kennedy, born in Hawaii in 1948, is the son of Stanley Kennedy, Jr. and Barbara Cox Anthony. He attended college at the University of Denver and received a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1970.  Two years after graduation, he joined the family business, Cox enterprises.

Initially, Kennedy was assigned to the Cox Newspapers division where he started in entry-level positions, learning the family trade from the ground up. He worked as a reporter, advertising salesperson, production assistant, copy editor, and as the business manager. He served as president of Grand Junction Newspapers, Inc. in 1979, and was named publisher of the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, where he worked on both the newsroom floor and the back shops. Workers called him the “New Kid”.  In time, he became the executive vice president and general manager of the company in 1986.

Cox Enterprises, whose divisions include cable systems, internet services, newspapers, television stations and radio broadcasting station, Manheim Auctions, Valpak, Kelley Blue Book, and Autotrader.com is one of the most diverse and wealthy privately held companies in America. Cox Enterprises was founded by Kennedy’s late grandfather, James Middleton Cox, in 1898. Kennedy now serves as Chairman of this massive and lucrative media company.

Kennedy inherited a 25 percent stake in Cox Enterprises when his mother passed away in 2005. He has a sister, Blair Parry-Okeden, who lives in Australia and is the second wealthiest woman in that country although she takes no active role in the family business.  Kennedy has a net worth of $8.2 billion, making him the 49th richest person in the United States. Cox Enterprises continues to do well and to grow by leaps and bounds. With earnings in 2013 of $1.5 billion, Kennedy shows no signs of stopping and might well become one of the top 10 richest persons in America within a decade.
