Johnny Depp Biography

John Christopher Depp was born in Owensboro, Kentucky, the youngest of 4 children. He moved frequently during his childhood and once estimated that they lived in more than 20 different cities before his 7th birthday. The family finally settled in Miramar, Florida. His parents divorced in 1978 when Depp was 15. His mother remarried Robert Palmer, whom Depp said was an inspiration to him.

Depp dropped out of high school to play in a rock band. His first wife was a makeup artist who introduced him to Nicolas Cage, who encouraged him to become an actor. Depp had a few minor movie roles before landing a lead role in a television series 21 Jump Street. Depp quickly became a teenage idol and even though this series was very successful, Depp felt that he was forced to accept roles he did not like. He vowed to only work on films that appealed to him. Depp’s first major film role was in the 1984 film A Nightmare on Elm Street. Depp appeared in Oliver Stone’s movie Platoon, but it was Tim Burton’s movie, Edward Scissorhands, that really established Depp as a leading Hollywood actor.

Since then, Depp has gone on to make numerous extremely successful movies including all 4 of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies,  Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Sweeny Todd, just to name a few. Depp now commands $20 million per film, making him the highest paid actor in the world.  Depp’s films have grossed more than $7.6 billion worldwide. He has a net worth of $400 million.  He splits his time between his estate in Los Angeles, and a luxury estate in the South of France. He recently purchased Burnham Westgate Hall in Norfolk, England, a 13 bedroom Georgian estate. If Depp never makes another film, he can live a luxurious life anywhere in the world just on the residuals from his movies and the marketing of his Pirates of the Caribbean character, Captain Jack Sparrow.
