Julian Robertson Biography
Julian Robertson Jr. was born in Salisbury, North Carolina in June of 1932. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1955 and served in the US Navy until 1957. After his service, he moved to New York City and worked for a short time as a stockbroker as the asset manager for Kidder, Peabody & Co. He took off for a brief time to write a book while living in New Zealand, then returned in 1980 to found Tiger Management with investments he received from family and friends.
Tiger funds had peak assets in excess of $22 billion in 1998, however, a failure to invest in technology and poor stock picks caused this fund to suffer serious losses by 2000. The S&P 500 had a 21 percent return in 1999, Tiger funds lost 19 percent. Ultimately, Tiger Management closed in March of 2000 and all capital was returned to investors. After closing out Tiger Management in 2000, Robertson kept using the hedge fund business to finance upcoming hedge fund managers in return for a stake in their companies. Many of the managers and analysts Robertson employed and mentored are now running some of the most successful hedge fund firms in the world including Maverick Capital, Blue Ridge Capital, and Viking Global. In addition to his hedge fund investing, Robertson is an active investor in companies in New Zealand, where he owns three lodges including The Farm at Cape Kidnappers, Matakauri Lodge, and Karui Cliffs Lodge. He also owns several wineries in the area and a few golf courses.
Robertson also owns several other extensive pieces of real estate including homes in Locust Valley, New York, Sun Valley, Idaho, Southampton, New York, and Central Park South, also in New York. He has a current net worth of $3.4 billion, which is quite impressive for a man with a failed business.
