Kanye West, Kanye Biography

Kanye West was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1977. His parents divorced when he was 3, so his mother took her son and moved to Chicago, Illinois. West’s mother was an English Professor and the Chair of the English Department at Chicago State University. West and his mother moved again when he was 10 to Nanjing, China, where his mother worked as part of an exchange program. West began writing poems when he was 5 and even his mother took notice when her son began drawing and getting into music in the third grade. He began rapping at that time and was writing musical compositions in the 7th grade.

Although his mother didn’t want to see her son take up rapping, she supported his efforts nonetheless, even renting a cheap recording studio for him. It was here the West met with music producer, DJ No ID, who became West’s mentor and taught him how to program beats at 15 years old.

West started college classes, but dropped out to concentrate on his music career. Kanye eventually convinced Jay-Z to sign him and give him a chance. He spent 4 years perfecting his debut album, The College Dropout, which came in at number 2 on the Billboard 200. It is still his best-selling album to date in the US. His next 4 albums were also successful and have impressive production credits including Janet Jackson, Beyoncé, and Alicia Keys. West has won more than 21 Grammys, 7 BET awards and 2 American Music Awards.

Besides the earnings from his music, West is well invested in other areas as well. He owns a chain of Fatburger restaurants; a line of shoes for Nike called Air Yeezy, and still another shoe line through Louis Vuitton. West has a current net worth of $145 million. He is married to Kim Kardashian and the couple currently has 2 children. Rumors say that West is in debt to the tune of $53 million and that his wife is not interested in helping him out. There are also rumors that the marriage is on the rocks, but these are merely speculation. In February of 2016, West tweeted that he was $53 million in debt and he asked his followers for prayers.

He angered his fans at one concert when he stated that, although he didn’t vote, he would have voted for Trump. Along this same line, this unpredictable musician was displaying bizarre behavior, even for West, at a concert in California, where he arrived almost 2 hours late, sang only 2 songs, then launched into a 17 minute rant about Hillary Clinton, Beyonce, and Jay Z before dropping the mic on the floor and walking off stage. He then cancelled his Los Angeles concert just hours before it was to begin, later on cancelling all upcoming concerts. On Monday, November 21st, 2016, West was transferred from his home in Los Angeles to a hospital for “his own safety.” Rep’s for the singer says that he is “exhausted” and was sleeping only every 48 hours. Others, however, have stated that the star was handcuffed to the gurney as he was placed in an ambulance. Time will tell if West is merely suffering from exhaustion or if he suffers from some type of mental health issue, such as depression.

He has stated that he might run for President in 2020, despite his reputation. West is a controversial figure in the music world, but even if these rumors about his possible debt are true, his overall net worth continues to increase.
