Kevin Durant Biography
Kevin Durant was born in Washington, D.C. in September of 1988. His mother and grandmother raised him when his father deserted the family when Durant was only 1. He loved basketball from a very young age, admiring Vince Carter and the Toronto Raptors. Durant played amateur basketball for several different teams in the Maryland area. It was during this time that Durant took on the number 35 for his jersey, in honor of his coach, Charles Craig, who was murdered at the age of 35.
Durant played high school basketball for three different schools; National Christian Academy, Oak Hill Academy, and Montrose Christian School. He played for the Longhorns at the University of Texas for one year while he attended college, but dropped out to enter the NBA draft. He was the second overall pick in the first round of the 2007 NBA draft and was selected by the Seattle SuperSonics. He was named NBA Rookie of the Year in 2007 and was the top scorer in the NBA for the 2009-2010 season. The SuperSonics moved to Oklahoma City and were renamed The Thunder.
In his short career, Durant has already earned more than $50 million in salary alone. He announced in 2010 that he had signed a 5 year contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder for a reported $86 million. He is a three-time NBA All-Star and a three time high scoring champion. He was also a part of the US Men’s National Basketball team that won the gold medal during the 2012 Summer Olympics. Durant will earn million this year alone in endorsements with numerous companies such as Nike, Degree, Gatorade, and more.
Despite his earnings potential, Durant has stated in interviews that “global marketing and all that stuff” holds no interest for him. Even though he doesn’t seem interested in making as much money as possible, this young star still has a net worth of $60 million and plenty of endorsements to keep his earning power going strong.
