Lemmy, Lemmy Kilmister, Ian Fraser Willis, Lemmy Motorhead Biography
Ian Fraser Kilmister, better known by his stage name of Lemmy, was born in Staffordshire, England, in December 1945. His parents separated when he was 3 months old. His mother later remarried George Willis. Lemmy did not get along with his new family. He grew up on the Welsh island of Anglesey. He says that his nickname, Lemmy, comes from “lend me” a quid as he once had a serious addiction to slot machines.
Lemmy began playing guitar for various rock groups in the 60’s, eventually landing a spot with the band “The Rockin’ Vickers.” He stayed with this band for several years, touring throughout Europe, when he began working as a part of the crew in London for The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Lemmy played bass guitar and sang for a band in the early 1970’s called “Hawkwind.” After playing with this band for a few years, Lemmy got into trouble with the law in Canada for possession of drugs. The band tossed him out, so he decided to create his own band, which he named “Motorhead.” Lemmy and Motorhead had their biggest success during the early 1980’s. Their album “No Sleep ’til Hammersmith” topped the charts, especially in the UK, and produced several number one hits. Motorhead sold 15 million albums worldwide and won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 2005.
We are sad to announce that this hard rockin’, hard drinkin’ metal head passed away December 28th, 2015, from what has been described as a very aggressive cancer. Lemmy died at his Los Angeles home only two days after his diagnosis. He was a young 70 years of age.
Lemmy was once considered to be a sex symbol by Maxim Magazine after he claimed to have slept with more than 1,000 women. He loved collecting items from the Nazi, Germany, regime although he stated that he was opposed to the regime. Lemmy had a net worth of $10 million at the time of his death.
