Leonard Lauder Biography

Leonard Lauder was born to Joseph and Estee Lauder in March of 1933. He first attended Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, then Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business. Lauder served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy as well.

Lauder joined the family business in 1958 at the age of 25.Estee Lauder owns several brands in the cosmetic industry including MAC Cosmetics, Smashbox, La Mer, Aveda, Clinique, Bobbi Brown, and, of course, Estee Lauder.

He stepped down as the company’s chief executive officer in 1999 after more than 3 decades of hard work. He still remains a member of the board.

An avid art collector, he began his collection buying Art Deco postcards when he was only 6 years old. He continued to collect postcards most of his life, in fact he collected so many that his late wife called this collection his “mistress.” His love of postcards led him to become friends with one of the owners of the Gotham Book Mart, a very well-known Manhattan bookstore. Lauder bought a building on East 46th Street and allowed Gotham to rent the storefront. Years later, when Gotham could not pay the rent, Lauder filed for eviction, forcing Gotham to auction the inventory. Lauder and his partner purchased the entire lot of books, angering some book collectors.

Lauder is a huge fan of art works done by the cubist masters Braque, Gris, Picasso, Klimt, and Leger. He is fond of spending million on some of the world’s most famous collections including those of the Swiss banker Raoul La Roche, British art historian Douglas Cooper, and Gertrude Stein.  Lauder has said that he will gift his 78 piece Cubist art collection to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. With a current net worth of $8.1 billion, Lauder can well afford to give such generous gifts.
