Lionel Messi Biography
Lionel Messi was born in Argentina in June of 1987. His father was a steel worker, his mother a part time house cleaner. Messi began playing soccer at the age of 5 for a local club that his father coached. He changed to a local team based in his home city called Newell’s Old Boys when he was 8. Messi quickly became a part of the local youth team that lost only one game in four years and was locally known as “The Machine of 87”, the year when these boys were born.
Messi was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency when he was 11. His local team was interested in Messi, but they were not interested in paying his medical treatment, which was nearly $1,000 each month. The director of FC Barcelona offered to pay for Messi’s medical treatment if Messi would move and play for Spain. With his father’s approval, Messi moved, along with his father, to Spain, where he began his career.
His international career began in 2007 when in the Copa America game Argentina beat the United States 4-1. His second game was against Colombia, with Argentina again winning 4-2. Argentina also won against Paraguay, but in the final match, Argentina lost to Brazil. Messi went on to play in the World Cup, the Summer Olympics, and many more championship games. He has acquired numerous awards and honors for his performances on the soccer field.
Unfortunately, this world famous soccer star has been involved in a nasty tax fraud case in Spain. The Spanish government is claiming that Messi allowed his father to hide money in offshore tax shelters in Belize and Uruguay. Messi claims his father handled all his business affairs and taxes and that he had no knowledge whatsoever about the handling of his money. This issue is still set to go to trial sometime in May or June of 2016, but Messi has attempted to repair things by paying the Spanish government about $5 million in back taxes. What remains to be seen is whether or not Messi will be found guilty and forced to spend time in prison.
Messi has been featured on the covers of Pro Evolution Soccer in 2099 and again in the 2011 video games. He has lucrative endorsement deals with Herbalife, Adidas, Gillette, and Samsung, to name a few. In fact, Messi earns almost as much from endorsements as he does from soccer. He is the highest paid soccer player in the world with an annual salary of $44.68 million. He also earns an additional $20 million, or more, every year in endorsements. This young soccer superstar has a current net worth of $180 million, which is certain to increase substantially in the coming years.
