Lynn Schusterman Biography
Lynn Schusterman was born in January of 1939 in Kansas City, Missouri. She grew up in the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma area. Her parents divorced when she was still quite young. Schusterman graduated from the University of Miami, Florida.
She married Charles Schusterman in 1962. Her husband and his brother founded their own oil and gas company in 1971 with a $30,000 loan from their mother. They soon divided the business and Charles turned his portion into what would become Samson Investment Company, which he named after his father. Samson Investment Company would become one of the largest gas production and exploration companies in the US. Her husband was diagnosed with leukemia in the early 1980’s and told he had 6 months to live. Schusterman and her husband tried numerous experimental treatments in an effort to save his life. However, her husband passed away in 2000. Schusterman then inherited the family business.
Schusterman spent some time thinking about what she wanted to do with the business and with her life. She has said in interviews that as a child she and her father used to help the elderly by delivering their groceries and trips to the doctor. In November of 2011 Schusterman decided to sell most of the company to LLR group for $7.2 billion. She dedicated a great deal of the money, $2.3 billion, to the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Foundation, which is devoted to various Jewish charities. Although the family sold most of the oil company part of the business, the newly formed Samson Energy still has large production sites along the gulf coast. Samson Energy has partnered with Chevron and Noble Energy on deep-water developments. Schusterman’s daughter Stacy is the current CEO.
Schusterman splits her time between her luxurious homes in Tulsa, Oklahoma, New York City, and Jerusalem. She has a current net worth of $3.7 billion.
