He left home at 14 to find a job and to help his mother, who was alone at home, supporting 6 children. Pacquiao did finally pass his high school equivalency test in 2007. He later took college courses in business management at Notre Dame of Dadiangas University in the Philippines,
Pacquiao was living for a time on the streets of Manila but started boxing and won the Philippine natural amateur boxing team, where he earned free room and board. Pacquiao would go on to win 57 out of 65 matches. Pacquiao is thought by many to be the best boxer in the world. He is the only boxer in the world to win titles in 7 different weight classes. Due to his huge success in the ring, Pacquiao has gone from being a homeless teenager, to one of the richest boxers in the world. This successful boxer also has endorsements deals with Nike, promotions for everything from telecommunications to medicine, and pay-per-view revenue sharing that nets him millions more each year. Pacquiao’s most recent fight, and loss, to Floyd Mayweather in May of 2015, still earned him an incredible $125 million.
In addition to his boxing, Pacquiao has also acted in, and produced, several movies, as well as an album in which he sings. His album has sold more than 2 million copies. He is a semi-professional basketball player in his home country, and was recently elected to the House of Representatives in his home country of the Philippines, as a lawmaker.
Pacquiao is one of the most popular sports figures on earth and his current net worth of $160 million reflects this. Pacquiao lives a quiet life, however, and doesn’t show much interest in flaunting his hard earned winnings.
