Marc Benioff Biography
Marc Benioff was born in San Francisco in September of 1964. He grew up in the San Francisco area and graduated from Burlingame High School. He then attended the University of Southern California and earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. While Benioff was still in high school, he founded Liberty Software and created games for the Atari 8-bit computer gaming system. He sold his first application, How to Juggle, for $75. Soon, he was earning royalties to the tune of about $1,500 monthly, which financed his college education. While he attended college, he had internships with Macintosh working as a language programmer. He has often said that he was very inspired by Apple’s founder, Steve Jobs.
After college, many thought that this bright young man would continue in the programming field, but Benioff worked for 13 years at Oracle Corporation, learning various aspects of the company including working in marketing, sales, as well as product development. At 23 years of age he was named Oracle’s Rookie of the Year. At 26, he was vice president of the company. In March of 1999, Benioff created his own company, Salesforce.com, a cloud computing company. He worked out of his San Francisco apartment to begin with and defined his company’s mission as “The End of Software.” Benioff literally turned the software industry upside down by using the internet to completely overhaul the way software programs were both designed as well as distributed.
Fortune magazine named Benioff one of the Smartest 50 People in the Tech world in 2010, as well as one of the Top 50 People in Business. Forbes named Salesforce.com on of America’s best companies. In 2014, Benioff launched SF Gives, a campaign that encourages the wealthy tech industry to give back. Benioff and his wife have donated $250 million to local children’s hospitals and millions more to address the homeless problem in San Francisco. Benioff is well-known for passing a $20 to every homeless person he passes. With a net worth of $3.7 billion, Benioff loves to vacation in Hawaii and signs off with an “Aloha” in his emails.
