Martha Ingram Biography
Martha Ingram was born Martha Robinsons Rivers in Charleston, South Carolina, in August of 1935. She attended Vassar College and received a BA degree in history in 1957. Ingram first worked at the radio and television station owned by her father, WCSC-AM & FM and WCSC-TV. After working there for a year and a half she married her college sweetheart Bronson Ingram. Her husband worked for and then inherited his family’s business; Ingram Industries which is a leading distributor of books, home videos, video games, along with the sale of various sorts of insurance.
Ingram raised 4 children while devoting herself to the local arts. She began to develop a local performing arts facility after her appointment to the advisory board of the Kennedy Center in Nashville, Tennessee. After an 8 year struggle, Ingram finally founded a three theater facility in downtown Nashville called the Tennessee Performing Arts Center.
In 1979, her husband encouraged her to join the family business as the Director of Public Affairs. When her husband passed away in 1995, Ingram took over as chairman of the board. She sold off the publicly traded Ingram Micro computer distribution in 1996. Today, her husband’s company consists of Ingram Book Group, Ingram Marine Group, and Ingram Insurance Group. Ingram Entertainment was recently sold to her son David. Ingram’s other son, John, is now chairman and Orrin is the chief executive officer and president of the family business. Robin, Ingram’s only daughter, is a member of the board of directors.
Ingram has gone on to assist with the development of the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, which opened in 2005 and houses the Nashville Symphony. She still does volunteer work and has received numerous awards for her contributions to the arts. Ingram has a current net worth of $4.5 billion and has retired, living in her mansion in Nashville, Tennessee.
