Meryl Streep Biography

Meryl Streep was born Mary Louise Streep in June of 1949 in Summit New Jersey.  Streep grew up in the Bernardsville, New Jersey area and even as a youngster, she loved to show off in front of the camera. She was chosen to sing at a school recital, which caused her to have opera lessons at the age of 12. However, even though she was talented, she didn’t enjoy singing opera and decided that she did not want to do anything she didn’t enjoy.

Streep attended Vassar College, then the Yale School of Drama. She made her film debut in 1977 in “Julia” and a year later, she received the first of her 19 Academy awards for The Deer Hunter. Streep has more Academy Award nominations than any other person in the history of film. Streep has won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Kramer vs. Kramer in 1979, then Best Actress for Sophie’s Choice in 1982, then again for The Iron Lady in 2011.  Her other nominated roles include Silkwood, Out of Africa, Postcards From the Edge, The Bridges of Madison County, and The Devil Wears Prada, among others. She also has 29 Golden Globe nominations under her belt with 8 wins, more nominations than any other person in history.

Streep is considered to be one of the best actresses in the world and is well loved. She has gradually seen her earnings per film increase substantially over the years; from $35,000 for The Deer Hunter in 1978 to $5 million for The Devil Wears Prada in 2006.  Despite her earnings and fame, Streep has managed to keep a fairly normal personal life. She has been married to Don Gummer since 1978 and has 4 children. She has a private estate in Connecticut, which boasts an extensive art studio, as well as a mansion in Brentwood, California, which she purchased in 1990 for $3 million. Streep has a net worth of $65 million and shows no signs of retiring.
