Michael Dell, born in Houston Texas, has come a long way since his humble beginnings of selling computers out of his college dorm room in the early 1980’s. With his original investment of $1000, he took his company, Dell Computers, public in 1988 with a market capitalization of $85 million. Dell Computers is one of the world’s biggest sellers of personal computers. This has made Michael one of the richest men in the world, with a net worth of $21.7 billion.

Although Michael stepped down as CEO in 2004, he returned in 2007. As of 2011, his more than 243 million shares of Dell stock were worth about $3.5 billion. Michael has roughly another $15 billion invested in other companies, which are managed by a firm named MSD Capital. In January of 2013, Michael had a bid to make Dell Inc. private for $24.4 billion, the biggest buyout since the Great Recession.

The majority of Michaels fortune comes from his private investment firm, which includes holdings in Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, IHOP restaurants, Applebee’s, and PVH corp.  Michael has also published a partial autobiography detailing his road to success. He lives in the most expensive house ever built in the state of Texas, located just outside Austin, Texas. It is referred to as “The Castle” due to its massive size of 85 acres and the 33,000 square foot size

The computer mogul also owns a four story home on the exclusive Caribbean island of Anguilla. Michael’s summer home, however, is at the “Raptor Residence” a 7 bedroom home in the gated community of Kukio, Hawaii. In 2013 this Hawaiian paradise home was valued at $58 million. Michael also has an affinity for some of the world’s most amazing cars including a 2004 Porsche Boxster, a Hummer H2, and a Porsche Carrera GT. Michael’s hobby is raising Arabian horses from the Bask lineage at his 6,380 square foot ranch in the nearby hills which is called the 6D Ranch.
