Novak Djokovic Biography
Novak Djokovic was born in Yugoslavia in May of 1987. He began playing tennis at a very early age and in the summer of 1993 he was spotted by a Yugoslav tennis player, Jelena Gencic. Gencic worked with Djokovic during the next six years when she realized that the boy needed increased levels of competition and needed to go overseas to find it. Djokovic then moved to Germany, where he attended the Pilic tennis academy. Djokovic spent four years there and, at the age of 14 began his international career. He won the European championship in singles, doubles, and team competition.
Djokovic went pro in 2003, and has won the Australian Open four times, Wimbledon twice, and the US Open once. During the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, he won the bronze medal. Djokovic has won more than $65 million in tournament prize money. He also has a lucrative endorsement with Sergio Tacchini, and although he did have an agreement with Adidas, he broke that contract to follow his idols Pete Sampras and John McEnroe and go with other companies such as Seiko and Peugeot. He also commands $1 million per personal appearance.
Djokovic has not forgotten his homeland of what is now called Serbia. He and his family have launched an empire there which includes several themed coffee shops called “Novak Cafe”, commodities trading, real estate sales, and much more. Djokovic even gave up his $750,000 winner’s check for winning the Italian Open in May for relief efforts for flooding in Serbia.
