Patrick Soon-Shiong Biography

Patrick Soon-Shiong was born in 1952 in South Africa to Chinese parents who had fled China during World War II. Incredibly intelligent, Soon-Shiong graduated from high school at 16 and received a medical degree from the University of Witwatersrand at the age of 23. He was 4th out of a class of 189. He completed an internship at Johannesburg General Hospital, later earning a Master of Science degree from the University of British Columbia, where he was the first resident ever to receive multiple research awards simultaneously from five different institutions.

After completing his Master’s degree, Soon-Shiong moved to the United States and began his surgical training at UCLA, where he became a board certified surgeon. Soon-Shiong performed the world’s first encapsulated human islet transplant, an experimental Type-1 diabetes treatment. He invented the nation’s first FDA approved protein nanoparticle for the treatment of breast cancer, which doubled the response rate in patients.

Soon-Shiong is the co-owner of more than 50 US patents and has published more than 100 scientific papers. He founded cancer and diabetes biotechnology firm American Pharmaceutical Partners (APP) in 1991 and sold it in 2007 for $5.6 billion. In 2008 Soon-Shiong sold his company Abraxis BioScience, the maker of his drug Abraxane for a cash and stock deal that was valued at more than $3 billion.

In October of 2010, he acquired a 4.5 percent stake in the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team. Soon-Shiong loves basketball so much that he had a professional indoor basketball court installed in his home. He is not a big fan of football but has said that owning a National Football League team would allow him to promote health and wellness among the players. Soon-Shiong recently paid $20 million to buy the controlling interest in KeyOn Communications, which provides internet service for rural areas, and another $10 million for a stake in Raptor Networks Technology, which produces switching equipment for high speed internet providers.

Soon-Shiong and his wife are extremely private people and avoid the press. After donating $23 million to St John’s hospital in 2007, he even asked if his donation could be anonymous. Soon-Shiong is the richest doctor in the world and the richest doctor who has ever lived, with a current net worth of $12 billion.
