Patty Duke was born Anna Marie Duke in Queens, New York, in December of 1946. Her mother suffered from clinical depression and her father was an abusive alcoholic. When she was 6, her mother threw her father out of the home. Care of Patty was turned over to her talent managers, John and Ethyl Ross. The Rosses often gave the young girl prescription drugs and alcohol. It was the Rosses, who changed her name to Patty.
Duke’s first acting jobs were in commercials and in a popular soap opera. Her first real acting job was in the Broadway Play alongside Anne Bancroft in “The Miracle Worker”. This was later made into a movie. Duke won an academy award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Helen Keller. Although she was yet to be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Sidney Sheldon noticed that Duke had two very different personalities and created a show for her based on these two personalities, “The Patty Duke Show”. Although it lasted only 3 seasons, this show earned Duke an Emmy award.
As an adult, Duke also made numerous films, including the Valley of the Dolls, Me, Natalie, and By Design. She also continued to do television work as well as a revival of the play The Miracle Worker, this time as Anne Sullivan. Duke was president of The Screen Actors Guild from 1985 to 1988.
Duke has been married 4 times and has 3 children. She is perhaps best known for her marriage to actor John Astin as well as a torrid affair with Desi Arnez, Jr.
Unfortunately, Duke suffered from a ruptured intestine and died of sepsis in Couer d’Alene, Idaho, March 29,2016. In lieu of flowers, her son Sean Astin asked for contributions to the Patty Duke Mental Health Intitative.
Duke owns an estate in Los Angeles worth an estimated $5.6 million. Besides her three sons, Duke leaves behind her 4th husband, Michael Pearce. Duke had a net worth of $5 at the time of her death.
