Paul Allen Biography

Paul Allen was born in Seattle, Washington, and is perhaps best known as the co-founder of Microsoft, along with his high school friend, Bill Gates. In 1975 the pair secured a contract to supply the DOS system that would eventually run on all of IBM’s personal computers. It was this contract that made Microsoft history and the beginning of the wealth that Paul now enjoys. He is estimated to be the 55th richest person in the world as of August of 2014.

Paul officially resigned from his position at Microsoft in November of 2000, but still owns 100 million shares, which constantly add to his net worth.  Beyond his earnings during his tenure and shares in Microsoft, he is the founder and chairman of Vulcan Inc., which manages his business investments. In 2013 Paul opened a new capital office for Vulcan Inc. in Palo Alto, California, which is dedicated to making new investments in internet companies and in emerging technology.  Paul has an investment portfolio with billions of dollars’ worth of investments in real estate, technology, and media companies. He is the proud owner of two professional sports teams, the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League and the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association. Paul is also part owner of the Seattle Sounders Football Club, which has recently joined Major League Soccer in 2009. Paul holds 43 patents from the US Patent and Trademark Office.

Paul is a key property developer and investor in the development of a Seattle neighborhood known as South Lake Union. Paul is the largest private landowner and his redevelopment projects have been lucrative. One deal alone led his firm to sell 1,800,000 square feet of office space to Amazon for $1.16 billion. Smart investments and planning have made Paul one of the wealthiest men in the world with a net worth of $17.1 billion.
