Pauline MacMillan Keinath Biography
Pauline MacMillan Keinath was born in July of 1934 in the Hennepin County of Minnesota. Her great grandfather, William Cargill, son of a Scottish sea captain, founded a one grain storage warehouse company at the end of the civil war, in Iowa; Cargill, Inc. in 1865. Cargill, Inc. developed some problems when William Cargill passed away, but one son-in-law, John MacMillan, helped the company recover by including in the business almost everything and anything that has to do with food production or storage including processing crops, trading commodities, cattle, selling food stuffs, sourcing ingredients, as well as offering financial risk assessment.
The Cargill/MacMillan families still control 90 percent of their company, and Pauline Keinath herself owns about a 9 percent stake in the company. She currently lives in St. Louis, Missouri and is one of the 7 remaining billionaire cousins that hold a stake in Cargill, Inc. Unlike many of the families who found their fortunes in the late 1800’s, such as the Rockefellers and Carnegies, the Cargill’s, which includes Pauline, still own and control their family business. In fact, Cargill, Inc. is the largest private company in America today, with annual revenue of more than $130 billion. The CEO of the company was always a member of the family up until 1995.
Keinath was listed as the 16th richest woman in the U.S. in 2014 when she was 80 years old. She has lived a very private and what would be described as an almost secretive life. Keinath is currently married and has 4 children. Although the exact net worth of other family members is unknown as current law states that owners of privately owned companies are not required to report their personal net worth, Keinath’s current net worth is known and it is a staggering $5.7 billion, even though she has no direct involvement in the company business.
