Peter Jackson Biography
Peter Jackson was born in Wellington, New Zealand in October of 1961. Both of his parents were immigrants from England and he was raised in the coastal town of Pukerua Bay. As a young child, Jackson loved movies and television such as Monty Python’s Flying circus and the Thunderbird series. One year, when Jackson was about 9, a family friend gave the Jackson family a Super 8 movie camera. Jackson quickly began to his own movies with his friends, even trying to remake his own version of his favorite film King Kong using his own stop motion toy models.
Friends in school remember that Jackson had no interest in sports, only in film making. He learned how to edit and make special effects on his own through trial and error. Jackson dropped out of school and began working full time so that he could save as much money as possible to spend on his own film equipment. Jackson soon bought a 16 mm camera and shot his own film that was later called “Bad Taste.”
Jackson has gone on to produce and direct some of the top grossing films of all time including King Kong, The Lovely Bones, Braindead, District 9, and, his most famous films, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and the Hobbit Trilogy. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy alone has earned more than $4 billion, with Jackson earning $180 million. King Kong earned more than $600 million in global sales, from which Jackson earned $40 million.
Jackson appears to enjoy his earnings tremendously. In 2009 he purchased his own Gulfstream G550 private jet, which can fly from New Zealand to the US without stopping for fuel. These jets cost approximately $60 million. He owns an extensive estate in New Zealand, with its own private lake, which has an estimated value of $5 million. With a net worth of $600 million, and several new film projects in the works, Jackson is set to become one of the richest directors of all time.
