Prince, Skipper, The Artist Formerly Known as Prince, The Unpronounceable Symbol, The Prince of Purple Rain Biography
Prince Roger Nelson was born in June of 1958 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His father was a jazz musician, whose stage name was Prince Rogers. Prince was named for the group his father worked with “The Prince Rogers Trio.” Prince had a very early start in his musical career, writing his first song when he was just 7 years old. Prince joined a cousin’s band while he was still in high school, where he played drums. After making a demo tape, Prince obtained his first contract with Warner Brothers records. He was 17 years old at the time.
Prince released his first album, simply entitled “Prince” in 1979. This album went to #4 on Billboards Top R&B Charts. This was only the beginning for this superstar, who would go on to release more than 30 albums and sell more than 100 million of them worldwide. Prince was one of the most popular, as well as successful, concert acts of his time.
This singing sensation was well-known for his disputes with Warner Brothers Records, going so far as to refuse to use his birth name “Prince”, because he felt it had been sold or hijacked, by Warner Bros. Prince eventually made his own recording label, Paisley Park Records. Some say that he still has hundreds of recordings on file that have never been released. This talented musician is also well-known for playing almost every instrument found in his songs.
Prince did not limit his talents to music, however. He was the star in a film about his early life entitled “Purple Rain”, as well as playing smaller roles in other films such as “Under the Cherry Moon”. Prince was in the process of writing an autobiography at the time of his death.
Unfortunately, Prince passed away unexpectedly on the morning of April 21, 2016. He had cancelled a few concert dates claiming he had a terrible case of the flu, but appeared to have improved and attended a concert at a jazz club on April 19th. He was found unresponsive in his Pasley Park Mansion and pronounced dead at 10:07 a.m. after efforts to revive him failed. An exact cause of death is undetermined at this time.
Although Prince had two brief marriages, he had no children, and it is unknown at this time if he had a will. His net worth is an astounding $300 million.
