Rand Paul, Randy Paul Biography
Randall Howard Paul was born in 1963 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The family moved to Lake Jackson, Texas, when he was 5 and this was where he grew up. When Paul was 13 his father, Ron Paul, was elected to the United States House of Representatives. As a teen, Paul spent his summers interning for his father’s congressional office. Paul attended Baylor University from 1981 through 1984, but dropped out. He then attended the Duke University School of Medicine and graduated with his M.D. in 1988. He completed his residency in 1993.
Paul moved to Bowling Green, Kentucky after completing his residency and worked the following 5 years for Downing McPeak Vision Centers. He then worked for Graves Gilbert Clinic before opening his own practice. Paul worked on his father’s reelection campaigns as well as his bid’s for presidency. In 2009, Paul decided to run against incumbent Kentucky senator Jim Bunning. In August of 2009, Paul’s supporters held a “moneybomb” to kick off his campaign. This was one of the largest fundraising events ever, with Paul’s campaign earning $433,589 in just 24 hours. Paul won his 2010 bid for the senate and was sworn in on January 5, 2011, along with his father. The father/son team served simultaneously in the senate.
After the shootings in San Bernardino, California, Paul told a radio audience the next day that he didn’t understand why mass shootings occur since everyone seemed to feel so sad afterwards. He refused to speculate on whether or not the shootings were inspired by “radical Islamists” , the junior senator did say that he couldn’t help but ask if this was Islamic terrorists.
Paul announced his bid to run for the 2016 Presidential race in April of 2015. Paul states that the GOP needs to broaden its appeal and that it has never been solely about rich people or Wall Street CEO’s but, rather, about middle class, working people. Paul has a current net worth of $2.5 million, which makes him one of the senators with the lowest net worth. However, this does still make him 32 time richer than the “average” middle class American.
