Randal Kirk Biography
Randal J. Kirk was born in Pleasanton, California, in March of 1954. The family moved several times while he was young as he is the son of an Air Force Master Sergeant. Kirk states that he taught himself to read by the age of 3. He attended Dublin High School in Virginia where his first job was selling cars and motorcycles. He earned a B.A, in Economics from Radford University in 1976, then a J.D, from the University of Virginia. He passed the bar exam in 1980 and spent the next 11 years practicing law in Bland County, Virginia, as their only lawyer.
In 1983, Kirk founded General Injectables and Vaccines, along with a partner. GIV was a Bland County based next day supplier of medical supplies to doctors. By the mid-1990’s, GIV spun off King Pharmaceuticals. Kirk and his partner split, leaving Kirk in sole control at GIV. In 1998, Kirk sold GIV for $65 million in cash up front and an additional $25 million in deferred payments. Kirk went on to found New River Pharmaceuticals Inc., which later developed technology that would make existing drugs safer. The company went public in 2004. Kirk developed a drug for attention deficit disorder called Vyvanse, which was approved by the FDA in 2007. Later that year, Kirk sold his shares in the company for $2.6 billion.
Although a billionaire by 2007, Kirk was not content. He launched another pharmaceutical company called Clinical Data, and then sold this company for another $2.1 billion in 2011. Kirk is currently focused on his new company, Intrexon, a privately held, synthetic biology company. His new companies have avoided venture capital. Kirk is fond of saying that money comes easily for those who find something they love to do and that society also finds to be valuable.
Kirk has a current net worth of $4.8 billion and lives in Manalapan, Florida. He owns 60 percent of Intrexon, which makes his share alone worth more than $1.8 billion.
