Pablo Picasso Biography

Pablo Picasso, born in Malaga, Spain, in 1881, was the first born child of his father, a painter and professor of art at the School of Crafts. Picasso showed a skill and passion for drawing at an early age. When he was 7, Picasso received formal training from his father in drawing and oil painting. His father once found his son drawing over his unfinished sketch of a pigeon and realized that at 13 years of age, his sons work already surpassed his own skills. His father then sent his talented son to the prestigious Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid, which was the premier art school in Spain.

As a young man, Picasso took his first trip to Paris in 1900, which at the time was the capital of the art world. Picasso was not rich and he and his roommate burned many of his early paintings just to keep warm his first winter. Picasso returned to Madrid where he founded a magazine, Arte Joven (Young Art). With Arte Joven, Picasso became a published artist for the first time.

Picasso continued to paint right up until his death in 1973.

Picasso is one of the most well-known artists of all time. His picture, Nude, Green Leaves, and Bust sold in 2011 for $106.5 million, another painting, Garcon a la Pipe, sold for $104 million, and Dora Maar au Chat sold for $95.2 million. His relatives opened the Museo Picasso Malaga in Spain in 2003 and many of his works are housed in the Museo Picasso in Barcelona. Based on the sales of his works at auctions, Picasso is the top ranked artist of all time with a current net worth of $500 million. Picasso’s paintings have been stolen more than any other artist, which attests to their overall value.
