Ray, Ray Davis Biography
Ray C. Davis was born in 1942 and is perhaps one of the most reclusive billionaires ever. He attended LeTourneau College in Longview in the 1960’s on a basketball scholarship. Best known now as the co-owner of the Texas Rangers baseball team, Davis worked in the energy sector for more than 40 years. He teamed up with Kelcy Warren to purchase Cornerstone gas pipeline company in 1993, and then the two continued to buy smaller networks of pipelines, eventually consolidating them into one larger, more efficient network. This energy duo then transferred this network of pipelines to El Paso, Texas, and created a natural gas retailer, distributor, and pipeline company like no other, Energy Transfer Equity. Davis stepped down as Co-CEO in 2007 and later removed himself from the board of directors in early 2013, but kept a 6 percent share in the company. Davis is still active in his investment company, Avatar Investments, LP.
Davis is so reclusive that even Forbes was unable to obtain a photograph of him for their website for several years. As co-owner of the Texas Rangers, he still goes to the office three or four days each week in the Globe Life Park area of Arlington, Texas, but he describes himself as a paper pusher who mostly reviews financial reports and non-player personnel decision. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred sees Davis as a huge asset and appointed him to the 8 member executive council.
Davis is the money behind a philanthropic company called Happy Davis, which he formed very quietly in 2008. To date he has given almost $9 million in funds for charities such as International Justice Mission, the Buckner Foundation, and many more. Davis and his wife bought the White Pine/Double Heart Ranch in Colorado for $198 million in 2007, as well as two private jets to fly him to and from his Colorado ranch and his Dallas, Texas home. Davis has a current net worth of $2.6 billion.
