Robert Downey, Jr. Biography
Robert Downey, Jr., was born in 1965 in Manhattan, New York. His father is an actor and filmmaker, his mother also an actress. Downey grew up in the Greenwich Village area of New York. Downey states that he was surrounded by drugs growing up, his father even allowed him to smoke marijuana when he was only 6 years old.
Downey had small parts in his father’s films beginning at 5 years of age. Downey was living in England at the age of 10, studying classical ballet. He attended Stagedoor Manor Performing Arts Training Center in New York as a teenager and when his parents divorced in 1978, Downey moved to California with his father. He dropped out of high school in 1982 and returned to New York to pursue an acting career.
Downey became a young star in the 1980’s, staring in films such as Less Than Zero and Chances Are, and at 27, he was nominated for his portrayal of Charlie Chaplin in the 1992 movie Chaplin. Unfortunately, soon afterwards, Downey became known for things other than acting, including numerous arrests for drug and alcohol abuse. He spent a short time in jail in 2000 and was arrested twice in 2001.
Downey pulled himself together, however, and made a comeback no one expected. After showing that he could stay clean and sober by performing in a number of small films, Downey hit the jackpot as Iron Man in 2008. Downey’s popularity as Iron Man has led to some of Marvel Comic’s greatest hits including The Avengers, which is the third highest grossing film of all time. Film critics agree that it is Downey’s portrayal of Iron Man that made Iron Man 3 the highest grossing movie of 2013.
Downey has a current net worth of $190 million and with many more films in the works, it appears that he will increase his bank account by many millions more before he is through.
